These ladies are headed to STATE for the FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR!
If you appreciate high school sports, stay with me and read a bit more about how incredible this is!
Unlike most high school sports in Indiana, cross country is NOT divided into classes for the State tournament. Of 408 teams in Indiana, they all compete together for 25 team spots at State.
I did a little research using IHSAA enrollment figures and basketball classifications, with 4A being the largest:
- Morgan is the only 1A school at State this season (and has been the only 1A team each of the last 4 years)
- Morgan Township is the only 1A school in Indiana history to qualify for girls’ cross-country State five times!
- 11 of the 25 State qualifying teams come from Indiana’s 25 largest schools by enrollment. (17 total of the 25 qualifying teams are 4A)
- 6 of the 25 teams qualifying are 3A schools – 3 public, 3 private
- 1 large 2A private school qualified
- Morgan has just 255 students, ranking 321st out of 408 IHSAA schools in enrollment.
- For comparison, the next-smallest public school at State ranks 163rd in enrollment, and the next-smallest private school ranks 188th.
- If cross country were divided into classes like other sports, Morgan would be the FIVE-TIME STATE CHAMPION in 1A.
- We are so proud of these girls. They work for 5 months, through the summer, through the heat, for this prize. They are a little family like no other sport. What they are doing and have done has never, and I dare say, likely will never be replicated in Indiana. It’s not only that they are the best in 1A. You can have the best small school team and not be able to compete with the big schools. But they measure up and do it year after year. David vs Goliaths.
Give them all the flowers.
