As the city continues ramping up for the 22nd annual Festival of the Lakes, hundreds of runners raced from Wolf Lake Pavilion for the City of Hammond’s annual Kathleen Pucalik Memorial 5K Roadie Run. The Roadie Run is a favorite amongst Hammond residents and visitors alike, kicking off an exciting week of music, carnival rides, and more.
“During the Roadie Run, I’m racing against my employees and they get the day off if they beat me,” said Mayor Thomas McDermott. “It’s great for promoting wellness within the workforce and the community. The race is named after late councilwoman, Kathleen Pucalik, who used to race me as well and beat me every year. With my 10 minute mile, I’m looking to give about 20 people the day off, but I’ll beat some of them.”
Runners from throughout the Region joined this year’s walk/run, which is named in honor of former Hammond Councilwoman Kathleen Pucalik. Registration began at 6:30 a.m., and participants could be seen warming up and performing their pre-race rituals around the PAV.
The race is part of the Calumet Striders Gold Cup series.
“We have about 400 people here. Only 25 to 30 are city employees and the rest are members of the community,” said McDermott. “It’s a great community event. We have the Calumet Region Striders here; they’ve made this one of their premier races. They bring in a good crowd and it’s a great partnership that we have.”
In addition to the 5k run, a free children’s mile walk and a 5k walk were also held, giving people of all fitness levels a chance to participate in this fun event. The city places a heavy emphasis on inclusivity at its events.
“This is my first time doing the Roadie Run and my very first official 5K,” said attendee Kelly Baer. “I’m excited to be out at Wolf Lake. I grew up in Hammond, and the revitalization that Mayor McDermott had brought to the area is such a delight to see.”
Racers who registered early were able to collect a race shirt when picking up their race packet. After the race, male and female runners who placed in the Top 3 for their age category were awarded medals. There were also voluntary categories to compete in for women over 170 lbs and men over 210 lbs.
Hammond becomes very busy around Festival of the Lakes season, so having a chance to gather the community together before the crowds arrive is appreciated.
“I enjoy the community, the family-oriented atmosphere, and the inspirational runners of this event,” said first time runner Gabriela Lopez. “Even for those who don’t normally run, this race is a great way to stay active and get involved in the community. It’s just wonderful.”
Festival of the Lakes kicks off on July 15 with a free concert featuring a freestyle experience from TKA, George Lamond, Judy Torres, and more! For a full line up of events, visit festivalofthelakes.com.
