The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) proudly celebrated College Go Week (Sept, 22 -26, 2025) with engaging experiences for students from elementary through high school, exposing them to a wide range of post-secondary opportunities, including college, trades, and careers.
This year marked a milestone, as Indiana’s new Graduation Pathways placed a greater emphasis on students selecting a trajectory that leads to enrollment, enlistment, or entrepreneurship. In response, GCSC strengthened its partnerships with Gary Alumni Pathways to Students (GAPS) and Junior Achievement (JA) to provide meaningful opportunities that help students envision their futures.
“College Go Week is not just about promoting higher education,” said Dr. Cynthia Treadwell, Chief Academic Officer of GCSC. “It’s about helping students understand the full range of opportunities available and empowering them to choose a pathway that reflects their interests, strengths, and values.”
At Beveridge Elementary School, students experienced a unique STEM-focused day. Representatives from local organizations and companies shared real-world insights, with the NIPSCO Gives Back program leaving a lasting impression.
“The students were familiar with NIPSCO, and some had very insightful questions and feedback,” said Karima Hasan Bey, Vice President, Gas Operations for NIPSCO. “We were very impressed by the curiosity and knowledge these children have about electricity and gas at such a young age.”
All GCSC schools hosted College Go Week activities:
The momentum continues beyond College Go Week. GAPS will support students throughout the year with FAFSA nights, college and career conversations and college tours. In addition, professionals, businesses, and organizations are invited to volunteer at Career Days at West Side Leadership Academy on November 20, February 19, and February 20.
“Partnerships are essential,” said Lisa Bennett, GAPS Board Chair. “By bringing alumni, professionals, and businesses into our schools, we’re showing students what’s possible and helping them connect their learning to real futures.”
