Crown Point Unveils Bike Trail Extension

The City of Crown Point will unveiled the expansion of the Veterans Memorial Trail during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Nov. 14, at Sheridan and Porter streets.

“The trail itself marks a few very important moments for our community. First, it brings another fantastic quality-of-life amenity to our Region, our citizens. Trust me when I tell you, if you don’t know, these trails are used every day throughout the year rain or shine,” Land said.

“Second, the completion of this section marks the City’s full completion of the Veterans Memorial Trail running through Crown Point. We now have 1.3 miles of the trail. Our southern border ends at 113th Avenue, and as you go north, this connects to the Summit Street trailhead, which connects you to the Erie Lackawanna Trail.”

Most importantly, Land noted, the project marks the City’s continued commitment to veterans.

“You are forever linked to this trail through our community to give you all the recognition that you have earned and deserve. Our veterans are our living links to history,” he said.

The City broke ground on the project on April 22. The approximately 1-mile expansion follows the old Pennsylvania Railroad in Crown Point, goes through the Bridgeport neighborhood and connects to the Erie Lackawanna Trail on Summit Street.

In addition to the expanded trail, the City also completed intersection improvements at Main and Summit streets in collaboration with the Indiana Department of Transportation and at Indiana and North streets, which included pedestrian signals at new crosswalks. The City also constructed a 26-stall parking lot near the new trail.

The nearly $1.347 million project was funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources through its Next Level Trails program. Work was completed by Butler, Fairman & Seufert and Gariup Construction.

“Trails are all about making connections between people, communities and Indiana’s great outdoors,” said Allen Hurst, DNR trails manager. “DNR is proud to support the completion of the Veterans Memorial Trail in Crown Point just days after Veterans Day. It adds to the increasing number of trails we now have across Indiana.”
