Crown Point Declares Local Disaster Emergency in Wake of Storms

Mayor Pete Land declared a local disaster emergency in the City of Crown Point on Wednesday, Aug. 12.  

The storms that rolled through Crown Point and the Region caused extensive damage in Crown Point, leaving various local roads closed due to downed trees and/or power lines. As of Wednesday, more than 17,000 NIPSCO customers in Crown Point remain without power. Restoration times are not yet available as damage assessments continue, according to NIPSCO. 

“This will allow the City to be included in any county, state or federal disaster relief efforts,” Land said. “On Tuesday evening, I spoke with a representative from Gov. Mike Braun’s office on the extent of damage in Crown Point, with the initial discussion regarding the State’s emergency declaration for the entire Northwest Indiana region.”  

The Crown Point police and fire departments have responded to hundreds of calls for service since Tuesday. On Tuesday, CPFD responded to a storm-related injury. A resident cleaning up storm debris suffered a minor injury, but did not need to be taken to the hospital. 

Storm clean-up remains ongoing throughout the City. At this time, City offices are without power and remain closed.  

The City has partnered with First United Methodist Church, 352 S. Main St., to have a cooling center at the church. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice. Residents are invited to stop by to charge their devices and cool off.  

“Our city crews and emergency services are continuing to clear roads and address the massive number of downed trees and limbs,” Land said. “Thank you to the countless number of citizens who have helped each other out. No matter your specific situation, we are in this together.” 

Under the declaration, all public offices and employees of the City of Crown Point are directed to exercise the utmost diligence in the discharge of duties required of them for the duration of the emergency and in execution of emergency laws, regulations and directives, both state and local.  

All citizens are urged to abide by any necessary emergency measures and cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans.   

The Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency shall remain in effect until rescinded by the City of Crown Point.
