Not even a winter storm can keep the holiday cheer out of Hobart! The city hosted its annual tree lighting ceremony at Festival Park on Sunday, November 30 to the joy of residents who turned out in droves for this holiday tradition.
This free event attracted residents from Hobart and the surrounding area with the promise of photos with Santa, crafts, fireworks, and a chance to gather together to kick off the Christmas season in the Region. Hobart’s tree lighting always draws a crowd, but until recently, the event was kept small due to COVID-19 safety guidelines. Following a successful move to Festival Park in 2023, however, the tree lighting has continued to grow.
“Having this event at Festival Park gives us more space and allows us to do more things like the firework show. We can also host more attractions as well, and have plenty of picture opportunities for attendees,” said Mayor Josh Huddleston.
The tree lighting caps off a weekend of holiday festivities that began yesterday with Small Business Saturday and continued into Sunday morning during the Merry Mini Makers Market. The range of activities is designed to ensure everyone can join in on the celebration.
“This is my daughter’s first tree lighting; I’m excited to start this tradition with her,” said Hobart resident, Destiny Burton.
Mr. Claus also made an appearance at Festival Park to meet the little Hobart residents in attendance and take photos with them. Photos with Santa are always a big hit at Hobart’s tree lighting celebration, and this year proved to be no different.
“This event brings a sense of unity, especially around the holiday times. Everybody gets excited to see the lights and the fireworks display. Most residents are really excited for tonight,” said Burton.
The tree lighting will conclude the City of Hobart’s special events for 2025. The year has been an incredible success for the city and its supporting departments, with events like Pumpkins in the Park, the Summer Market on the Lake, and the annual Dam Duck Race and Cardboard Boat Race getting residents and visitors to Festival Park to enjoy time with each other throughout the year.
The holiday celebration concluded with one of Hobart’s famous fireworks displays to the delight of the crowd. With the fireworks, tree lighting, and visit from Santa, the City of Hobart has officially begun its holiday season.
“When we get people to come together to celebrate the holiday season, it’s magical. It’s great to see all of the kids, parents, and everyone having fun. It’s just really awesome to see everyone come together,” said Mayor Huddleston.
With 2025 coming to a close, the City of Hobart is looking forward to an exciting 2026 season at Festival Park and around downtown. Be sure to check out the Hobart Events page this new year to see all of the family-friendly events happening in the city.
