City of Elkhart recognizes progress at 2026 State of the City

City of Elkhart recognizes progress at 2026 State of the City

The City of Elkhart invited residents to The Lerner Theatre’s Crystal Ballroom on April 16 to recognize the progress being made throughout the city under Mayor Rod Roberson’s leadership. The event gave the people of Elkhart an opportunity to see firsthand how their city continues to improve as well as the next developmental steps towards the future.

“The administration has made a concentrated effort to address housing needs across the entire city at all income levels,” Roberson said. “Last year, we broke ground on nearly 400 apartment units and 101 single family homes. The momentum doesn’t stop there, as we’re adding an additional 210,000 units and mixed use retail.”

Throughout 2025, the City of Elkhart made great strides on a number of projects, including work on the Delta Neighborhood along the riverfront, major redevelopment projects in downtown Elkhart, the continuation of the ASPIRE project, and quality of life improvements for residents and guests.

“We are investing in our four key pillars: neighborhoods, public safety, quality of place and infrastructure.” Roberson said. “These pillars are the foundation of everything that we do. The reality is that today, Elkhart can’t be just a place where people come to work; it must be a place where people choose to live. When we invest in the quality of a place, we become a magnet for talent. Neighborhoods across the city are undergoing transformative investment, development and redevelopment. In 2025, we delivered another outstanding year. We installed five new playgrounds, and since 2020, have improved over 60% of our city’s 18 playgrouns and unprecedented investment in five short years.”

The State of the City is important for residents to stay involved in their government. The free event encourages the people of Elkhart to take an active role in the decisions affecting them everyday and offers the opportunity for residents to meet with municipal leaders in a friendly environment outside the office.

In addition to celebrating 2025’s successes, Mayor Roberson used the State of the City address to promote Elkhart’s 2026 commitment to collaboration and growth. It’s through working together as a community that Elkhart can set progress in motion.

“When I accepted an award in Italy for our city’s planning, I told them, ‘This isn’t a mayor’s award; it’s a testament to a city that doesn’t know how to quit.’” Roberson said. “Elkhart has always punched above its weight, and tonight we’re going to show everybody why.”

Elkhart continues to be a county leader in business, economic, and community development. Thanks to strong leadership, a supportive Chamber of Commerce, and residents willing to buy into the city’s future, it will remain an example for others to follow. The evening’s State of the City was hosted by the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Spark41.
