Central Park Plaza lights up with patriotic spirit with America 250 Celebration Concert

Patriotic music, community pride, and an evening of live entertainment came together on Friday, July 3, as residents gathered at Central Park Plaza for the America 250 Celebration Concert featuring Jonny James. The free concert, which began at 7 p.m., served as one of the signature events during the City of Valparaiso’s weekend-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Jonny James is an American country music singer, songwriter, and Nashville recording artist from Northwest Indiana. His musical influences span all genres, including Eric Church, Bruce Springsteen, Jason Aldean, and more.

The event was presented in partnership with Valparaiso Events and Valpo Parks. Families, friends and visitors filled the downtown plaza throughout the evening, celebrating the nation’s history while enjoying live music. The concert highlighted the city’s ongoing effort to commemorate the significance of America’s 250th anniversary with events designed to bring the community together through entertainment, patriotism, and civic pride.

Katie Abel, executive director of Valparaiso Events, considers this event to be a great opportunity to celebrate the history of the United States, especially here in Northwest Indiana.

“This was a combined effort this whole week with Valpo Park, the City of Valparaiso and Valparaiso Events. The spirit of collaboration and coming together to put on a week full of events is really special, and is a reflection of our country and the spirit of collaboration that we need together as a country,” said Abel.

Creating a meaningful experience was at the forefront of how this came to fruition. The event, which showcased the collaborative efforts of the City of Valparaiso, Valparaiso Events and Valpo Parks, combined live entertainment with community gathering spaces to provide an experience that appealed to the residents.

“We had an entire week full of events. It started on Tuesday with a concert, Wednesday with the outdoor movies, and last night at the Opera House and so on. Tomorrow is the big event at Valpo Parks. There are a lot of things going on, so by combining forces, we were able to do something really cool and do so many things throughout the week,” said Abel.

According to Abel, events like the America 250 Celebration Concert are special for the community, because it can bring together people of all ages.

“The Jonny James Concert is an all ages event. He is Nashville based, but he’s local, originally from the region. He’s able to bring together local friends and family, too,” said Abel. “With the splash pad open, there’s lots of activities for kids. We really love having family-friendly events where everyone can come together and have a good time and celebrate.”

The concert served as a reminder that the community events in Valparaiso extend beyond simply the entertainment; they also give people a chance to honor shared traditions and recognize the day in 1776 that gave this country its independence.

As the concert and Fourth of July festivities came to a close during the weekend celebration, Mayor Jon Costas reflected on the significance of Independence Day and the importance of preserving the ideals on which the nation was founded for many years to come.

“Today is the pinnacle of what’s been an amazing week for America 250. Whether it was a movie downtown, the cabaret on Wednesday, classic cars, barbecue, and a concert after that,” said Tristan Leonhard, parks director at Valpo Parks. “We have an amazing fireworks show, and it’s exciting to have everyone here to see it.”
