NorthShore Health Centers Family Nurse Practitioner Brittany Brice possessed two interests from a young age that compelled her toward her career today: a passion for helping others and a fascination with the human body.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I just loved learning about why our bodies do the things that they do and work the way that they work,” Brice said. “Even when I was a little kid, I really wanted to be a part of the healthcare profession. I was one of those odd kids that didn’t mind going to the doctor or the dentist. As I grew older, I had this passion for wellness and wanted not only to promote wellness within myself but also to promote wellness within my loved ones and people surrounding me.”
Prior to beginning her role as family nurse practitioner at NorthShore in November of 2024, Brice was a bedside nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital while completing her graduate studies. While she always knew she wanted to work in the medical field, she wrestled between becoming a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant while in college.
“I ultimately decided on being a nurse practitioner and going the nursing route because I feel like nursing has a holistic nature and does a really great job of looking at the human being as a whole. It teaches you how to care for people—not just for their comorbidities or their conditions but truly care for the individual as a whole,” Brice said.
As a family nurse practitioner, Brice sees anywhere from 20 to 30 patients a day who are all at different stages of life. Whether the patient is 10 or 100, Brice cares for and delivers medical findings to her patients with compassion and intentionality. Brice enjoys educating patients about their health, cutting through the noise of excess information that patients see online, and helping them digest the things they need to know. One thing she has learned is to never assume patients’ health literacy but to meet them where they are at and develop rapport.
“It’s all about the relationship that you develop with patients. I am there for their highest and their lowest moments,” Brice said. “I feel like that is another big reason why I wanted to go into family practice – to create those meaningful relationships, to see people over time, and to check in with them. You’re not just taking care of their medical conditions, you’re also creating a relationship. I ask, ‘Hey, how are you doing? How are your kids doing? You said your daughter got married a couple months ago. How was the wedding?’”
While Brice’s favorite part of her role is connecting with patients, many of her favorite experiences surround her involvement in NorthShore’s community outreach efforts. She admires NorthShore’s commitment to extending healthcare access across the Region, doing annual wellness exams, blood pressure screenings, and back to school events via a mobile unit.
When she is not caring for patients or aiding in NorthShore’s community outreach, Brice enjoys spending time with loved ones. She enjoys cuddling with her dog, reading, and practicing what she preaches to her patients, whether that means exercising or trying a new healthy recipe.
