Although summer hasn’t officially begun, tradespeople and construction workers across Northwest Indiana are already out in the field, making a meaningful impact in their communities. Berglund Construction has started off the 2025 season on a high note, breaking ground and starting pre-construction on several projects throughout the Region.
Josh Schoon, Project Executive at Berglund Construction, is proud of the progress his team has made so far this year.
“We have a lot of exciting projects going on right now in Northwest Indiana,” Schoon said.
“We’re working on two community-focused projects: the Tolleston Opportunity Campus in Gary, which includes renovating the existing Boys & Girls Club and adding an 80,000 SF space for a new YMCA and Methodist Hospitals partnership; and the transformation of the old Chesterton Middle School into the Duneland Family YMCA’s Healthy Living Campus. Both projects will help improve the community from a health and fitness standpoint with new opportunities for families to grow.”
These new spaces will become the local main attractions where families can connect, spend quality time together, and contribute to a greater purpose.
“The great part about these projects is that we’re taking buildings that have been around forever and giving them new life and purpose,” Schoon said. “We are currently restoring the 1st level grand hall in the abandoned 100-year-old former Bank Calumet headquarters building in downtown Hammond. The restoration of this space into a beautiful event center, soon to be called The Reserve, will also serve as a coworking space for the residents of the building. This project includes the restoration of the 38-foot vaulted plaster ceilings, new exterior curtainwall windows and decorative painting to highlight the aesthetic history and beauty that this building once had. The developer renovated the upper floors to become apartment complexes as part of a separate project.”
Berglund Construction invests significant time in preparing for each project—some take years to fully materialize. The Tolleston Opportunity Campus is one such example, having been a community priority for several years. Berglund became involved in the summer of 2024, culminating in the official groundbreaking on April 23, 2025.
Another project requiring extensive pre-construction planning from Berglund Construction is the new student residence hall at Purdue University Northwest. Over the past couple months, Schoon and his team have begun focusing more closely on bringing this project to life with the groundbreaking and start of sitework.
“There are a lot of projects that have some build up, and that’s when we get on board,” Schoon said. “It certainly takes time and effort to lead up in the process once we’re selected as the construction builder for a project.”
Berglund Construction has a full slate of projects scheduled for the rest of the year, along with active planning underway for 2026. Guided by its core mission to transform communities across Northwest Indiana, the company is committed to partnering with clients to create lasting, positive change in the region.
“I’m super excited about the Tolleston Opportunity Campus project,” Schoon said. “That project is going to mean so much to the Gary community and the residents. It’s taken a lot of effort, thought, and planning to get the project going. We also have a project with Shirley Heinze at Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve that will bring new trails, boardwalks, a pavilion and a sidewalk to help connect this space to the surrounding community. We have another project for a confidential client that we’ve been in pre-construction on for two years now. We’ve had some road bumps, but it’s starting to gain some traction again. We’re supposed to break ground on that project at the beginning of 2026. It’s an exciting time for us, and we’re looking forward to it.”
