Belvedere Senior Housing Hosts Annual Black History Month Soul Food Night

Belvedere Senior Housing Hosts Annual Black History Month Soul Food Night

On February 26, Belvedere Senior Housing assisted living community hosted its third annual Soul Food Night to celebrate Black History Month. Attendees included residents and their families, community partners, and members of the general public.

“It’s one of our most attended events every year,” Director of Sales and Marketing Andrea Puente said. “We do two events that are open to the public every month, and then we do one family night quarterly. This is the first quarter’s family night, and we’re expecting to meet many family members of residents who have moved in over the past year and we are excited to see many familiar faces as well!”

Live entertainment was provided by The Fabulous Kings Band. They played throughout the dinner and had residents celebrating, singing along, and dancing. The meal included fried chicken and fish, yams, macaroni and cheese, beans, cornbread, and homemade desserts.

“There’s live entertainment, top-tier service, and delicious food,” Puente said. “Our guests get to mingle with the best nurse in the region, Michelle Hynek, our Director of Nursing.”

Belvedere was voted Best in the Region for places to work by the “Times of Northwest Indiana”. This year, they are hoping to repeat that honor, as well as earn Best Assisted Living Community and Best Nurse.

“I want everyone to understand the difference between nursing homes and assisted living,” Puente said. “While both serve tremendous purposes for people at various stages of life, we’re a very active community. We promote and encourage independence for our residents, but their support is always here, 24 hours a day, if they need it. I want people to see how lively and how active our community is and clear up some of the misconceptions they may have.”

Belvedere hosts a number of events to keep residents active and feeling young at any age. This event has become a favorite of many – not only those residing at Belvedere, but also residents of the community. Opening the event to the public invites people to come in and see the joys of living their golden years in celebration.

Of course, an event like this would not be possible without the generosity of community partners making it happen.

“I want to thank VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana, who graciously sponsored chicken for the event,” Puente said. “All of our team, every single employee, got together. They were either working in the kitchen, cleaning up everything so our community can look even nicer, or they were helping set up. We truly came together as a team to make sure that we put on an amazing event for our residents and their families.”
