Kamryn Shtompil grew up and went to high school in Portage. She’s always had an interest in working with others through their lives. Her time as a high school student initially showed her that, but it really was her experiences at Valpo’s Ivy Tech Community College that set her up to fulfill her future.
As an undergraduate, Shtompil started in a human-services program. She received numerous internships that way. One of her roles as an intern was with Family House, an organization in Valparaiso providing supervised visitations, transfers, and other therapeutic offerings in a home-like environment. Later, she completed her master’s degree in social work, and now, she is the director at Family House where she was once merely interning.
For seven years, Shtompil’s been in her current role. She’s in a position where she’s permitted to benefit the community in ways other initiatives cannot. She works to help people in need, and she’s made aware of how important her vocation is. There are constantly things that need to get done, so she stays busy.
“Family House offers such a niche service. There are a lot of families that need them, and we’re able to provide for them. Outsiders may not be educated on what we do, and that education is something I have to work on. It’s impactful,” she said. “I’m connected through my job, and that’s set me up for success, but there’s plenty of work left to do.”
Shtompil’s standing in a directing capacity means she oversees all the operations of her facility. She credits her strong team with helping her run everything smoothly. She also conducts outreach and development within the cities and towns surrounding the one she lives and works in. Her eyes are regularly set on attracting more visitors and supporters.
Since Family House has been around for almost half a century, Shtompil’s looking to further its legacy so that it stands for another 50 years or more. She’s uplifted co-workers, wishing to improve the foundation itself. It takes more than a few small steps to bring about big changes. However, she’s somebody who relishes holding the big picture in mind.
“What makes us unique is that we are child-centered, and we are neutral. We’re in it for the best interests of the children. Making sure they have safe access to each of their parents is really vital for them, and I want people to realize that and see that there’s more to supervising,” she said. “Our kids are the future of our community, and services like ours make strong families and communities.”
Several crucial folks have played large parts in shaping Shtompil. The one who preceded her guided and poured energy into her. This has assisted her in fulfilling the duties laid out in her occupation’s description. Her leadership skills and capabilities have developed over time, and she’s slowly stepped more forcefully into what makes up her livelihood. A close family member was also integral in her growth.
“My mom has been a great influence on me, because she’s someone who genuinely cares for children, families, and the community. She’s been a great example of what it means to be a professional woman in the field. She really inspired me so much as I got closer to where I am today. I believe that with all my heart,” she said. “My hope is to continue setting Family House up for success in a similar way.”
In her free time, Shtompil is usually with her husband. They’ve been married for two years, and they love exploring their city together. They enjoy checking out the nearest restaurants and taking part in local events. On top of all that, they’re avid board-game collectors and players.
Working at Family House, Shtompil is in touch with her community in ways her fellow citizens might not be. That adds on to what she already brings to it on the more personal side. She’s found there are countless aspects to it she’s grateful for.
“I just love so many things about Valpo. I love the sense of community in this director position, with it being more community-based. I love seeing how there are so many dedicated individuals, organizations, and nonprofits that are working and collaborating together. That’s something that other towns don’t have, and I feel Valpo is always looking to make itself the best it can be for its residents,” she said.
