Recently, Doral Renewables celebrated the operational launch of Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II phases of the larger Mammoth Solar project, which includes Mammoth North. This is being developed into a 1.3 GW site. Constructed over the course of 18 months, together, Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II have a combined capacity of 900MWac.
While these three phases took a year and a half, the vision of the project in its entirety began many years before.
“There was a vision put in place about six to seven years ago, which is to have the Mammoth campus go fully operational,” said Amit Nadkarni, Chief Operating Officer at Doral Renewables LLC. “That vision is being realized shortly.”
Like any major project, Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II experienced challenges and hurdles. The hard work and commitment makes it worth it. This is Doral Renewables’ outlook as it continues to complete its obligations to its stakeholders as part of the entire project, including the county, the community, the financing parties, and the offtakers (the entities buying the power).
“Everything looks good when you have a proof of concept on a piece of paper,” Nadkarni said. “When it is actually built out, it is much more rewarding and exciting.”
One of the most exciting aspects of the Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II projects was its speed to power aspect. Typically, it takes three to four years just to build out the infrastructure for the grid. Doral Renewables cut this industry average in part by building the infrastructure out themselves in collaboration with its contracted partners. Ultimately, the infrastructure was completed in a mere 15 months.
“We control our own destiny out there,” Nadkarni said. “However, the rigor, the tenacity, and the grit that it took on a day-to-day basis for 15 months was truly the toughest challenge on this project.”
They not only met the challenge of updating the needed infrastructure to connect these phases of the project to the grid, but also beat the typical infrastructure build out timeline. Doral Renewables takes a lot of pride in their recent accomplishment.
“Had we waited and waited and allowed the counter party to build that infrastructure, this project would not have been going operationally for a few years,” Nadkarni said.
As with all of their projects, Doral Renewables remains committed to fulfilling their promises to the community and working in tandem with landowners to deliver affordable and reliable energy source to the grid.
With the ability to power the equivalent of 165,000 homes, the Mammoth project in its entirety will be the largest operational solar project in the country.
Together Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II are contributing to this and adding more solar power, the most affordable type of electricity, to thousands of homes across Northwest Indiana and beyond.
