City of Valparaiso Announces Annual Fall Leaf Collection Schedule

City of Valparaiso Announces Annual Fall Leaf Collection Schedule

The City of Valparaiso will begin its annual curbside leaf collection on November 2, continuing through  December 4, weather permitting, announced Valparaiso City Services. Valparaiso City Services crews  will rotate through the city’s four collection zones throughout the season. Residents can follow collection  progress and identify their neighborhood’s zone at bit.ly/3W0hySm.

Each year, City Services collects an average of 11,000 cubic yards of leaves, weighing approximately  2,200 tons. Because leaf collection depends on weather conditions, including rain, wind and  temperatures, the pace of collection can vary from year to year. A gradual leaf drop allows crews to  maintain a steady collection schedule. However, when leaves fall all at once, collection can take longer.  Some neighborhoods also require additional time due to the concentration of trees in the area. VCS will  make operational adjustments as needed to provide the best possible service.

Crews will work their regular hours of 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. Hours may be  extended, including weekend work, as needed. Collection progress updates will be posted on the City’s  City Services – Public Works Division webpage to help residents know when crews are working in their  neighborhoods.

Residents can help keep leaf collection running smoothly by following these guidelines:

∙ Rake leaves to the curb area within the public right-of-way, not into the street. Leaves  placed in city streets can block drainage, cause flooding and contribute to property damage.  Placing leaves in the street also violates City ordinance.

∙ Keep leaf piles free of debris. Crews cannot collect piles containing rocks, sticks, garbage or  other debris.

∙ Keep leaf piles clear of obstacles. Avoid placing leaves near parked vehicles, mailboxes and  other obstructions.

∙ Bag leaves after December 4. After curbside leaf collection ends, residents should place  leaves in biodegradable lawn bags. Off-season pickup by brush trucks is available by  appointment only.

The City appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation throughout leaf collection season as  crews work to serve neighborhoods across Valparaiso.
