Big Shoulders Fund Northwest Indiana launches pilot Law Program

We’re proud to announce the pilot year of our new Law Program for 7th grade students!

Modeled after our successful Chicago Law Program, this initiative gives students an inside look into the legal world — from understanding the roles of defense attorneys and prosecutors to crafting compelling opening and closing statements. Thanks to the dedication of attorneys George W. Carberry of Burke Costanza & Carberry LLP, who is volunteering at St. Mary Crown Point, and Joseph Jaskowiak of Hoeppner Wagner & Evan LLP, who is volunteering at St. Paul, students are gaining hands-on experience and mentorship that brings the study of law to life.

Throughout the school year, students will participate in interactive lessons designed to build their understanding of legal processes and courtroom procedures. These lessons culminate in a unique capstone experience where students present their cases before a judge, putting their knowledge and skills into practice in a real-world setting. The program not only introduces students to potential career paths in law but also strengthens critical thinking, public speaking and teamwork skills that will benefit them in any field.

We are excited to grow the Law Program. If you are interested in volunteering and helping guide the next generation of legal minds, we would love to hear from you! Please contact Shellie Zaberdac at szaberdac@bigshouldersfund.org to learn more about opportunities to get involved in our Law Program.
