Redwood Landscape is Northwest Indiana’s premier landscaper. Each completed project builds upon a reputation for quality craftsmanship, impeccable work ethic, and satisfied clients. While Redwood has had almost two decades of experience to perfect its craft, the core of every project begins with Owners Todd and Joy Zandstra’s belief in family.
Behind successes like the Perthshire project and Walkerton Park is a team of highly skilled professionals, all working together towards bringing customers’ dreams to life. Fostering that camaraderie makes a big difference in the workplace. The Zandstras encourage their team to have open communication when tackling projects together.
“It takes all of us to get things accomplished,” Joy Zandstra said. “We spend a lot of time together, and if you don’t like the people that you work with, you don’t get excited about coming in. We try to make the office a fun place to be and show our team that we’re all in it together. No one is a master at all things; it can take a village to accomplish everything.”
That collaborative spirit is especially important when something isn’t going right. Whether it’s an issue on the job or a personal circumstance that is affecting performance, the Zandstras have done their best to make sure every team member feels safe explaining their situation and asking for help.
“We try to make it so that people feel comfortable coming to us,” Joy Zandstra said. “Things can happen. Maybe something happens in your personal life, and you can’t put as much into the job as you want, so we need to find a different role or switch things around. We try our best to make things work for everyone.”
The Zandstras believe that overcoming problems isn’t about assigning blame; it’s about coming up with solutions together. It’s a belief instilled in every member of the team.
“Accidents happen,” Joy Zandstra said. “It’s easier to talk about those accidents if the team trusts us and each other. No one is trying to get anyone in trouble when something bad happens. Instead, we work together to get through it.”
The importance of this lesson extends even to the office’s youngest employees: the Zandstra kids. The Zandstras work as a family to bring success to their clients, and that often includes their children.
“We want them to see what it’s like working together as a team,” Joy Zandstra said. “We want them to see that it’s not always easy, but we still take care of everything that needs to be taken care of. We like to include them in what we’re doing, and they’re interested in it. They’ve been around our work their entire lives, so they’re definitely along for the ride.”
