Dr. Johanna Nimeth brings compassion and commitment to McAfee Animal Hospital

Making it known that caring and helping out in the community matters is the main objective for McAfee Animal Hospital. For decades, the organization has been a trusted facility that cares for pets in Valparaiso and throughout the Region. In order to maintain a high standard in the community, the animal hospital is always motivated to improve. Recently, McAfee brought in new doctors to help keep that goal alive, including Dr. Johanna Nimeth, a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) who has had a lifelong passion in this industry.

Nimeth lives in Valparaiso alongside her husband, Frank, and their 11-year-old son, Frankie. Originally growing up in Rock Island, Illinois, she went to veterinary school at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Once she graduated in 2010, she decided to make the move to Valparaiso, where she has lived for the past 15 years.

A career path in veterinary work has always been fascinating to Nimeth, and it all started when one of her childhood pets was not feeling well and needed a check-up from a veterinarian.

“When I was young, I had a hamster that got sick,” Nimeth said. “We took my hamster to the vet, and they were able to give medication to make her better. I thought this was so cool. That’s when I decided that I wanted to help people out by helping their animals, just like the vet helped me and my hamster.”

Nimeth brings to McAfee experience working with exotic animals and avian species. She also spent two years at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife in Sanibel, Florida, and was the manager for the Wildlife Medical Clinic in Illinois throughout veterinary school.

While she has not been a part of the McAfee family for long, it’s been a seamless fit for Nimeth to get accustomed to the entire team.

“I met Dr. Brooke McAfee at a conference last year, and she told me to come by and meet everyone at McAfee,” Nimeth said. “I visited several times and got to know everyone. I felt like I just fit right in from the start.”

Now that she’s a part of the team, Nimeth can’t wait to get into the action with her new work family. Whether it’s collaborating with experienced or up-and-coming vets, she’s looking forward to teaching and learning from her peers.

“It’s very exciting for me to join the McAfee team,” Nimeth said. “Everyone seems to work well with one another, and the clients are awesome.”

With a lifelong passion that focuses on caretaking for animals, it’s no surprise that Nimeth has her own pets to love outside of the animal hospital. She has two dogs named T-Rex and Hodor. T-Rex is a chihuahua mix, and Hodor is a combination mix of a St. Bernard, mastiff, and Great Dane. She also has a corn snake named Iron Man and a leopard gecko named Nightcrawler.

While Nimeth has a lot of responsibilities at McAfee Animal Hospital, she cherishes her time outside of work as well. Her loved ones are the biggest priority to her.

“When I have free time, I enjoy kayaking, biking, and spending time with my family,” Nimeth said. “I also enjoy watching reality TV shows and doing various craft projects.”

The entire McAfee team is excited to have Nimeth join them in giving quality, compassionate care to pets across Northwest Indiana. They are confident that her knowledge, caring personality, and dedication to veterinary medicine will make for a strong addition to the team.
