White Family Leaders Scholars experience a day of growth and connection

Sixty-two White Family Leaders Scholars from Andrean High School, Bishop Noll Institute, and Marquette Catholic High School gathered for a day of immersive leadership development at Camp Triangle Hills of the Crossroads YMCA in Crown Point. The retreat marked the kickoff event for the 2025–26 program year, setting the tone for a year of growth, service, and community.

Scholars took on team-building challenges that pushed them physically and mentally—from scaling the Y Wall to navigating the low ropes on the Challenge Course. Each activity required courage, collaboration, and creative problem-solving—essential skills for young leaders preparing for high school, college, and beyond.

Inside the Leadership Lab, students reflected on emotional intelligence and authentic leadership, while the Leadership Quest invited them to practice resilience, empathy, and teamwork in new and unexpected ways.

As one scholar reflected, “I realized today that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice—it’s about listening, trusting your team, and not giving up when things get hard.”

A highlight of the day was a special visit from Beth White, whose family’s generosity makes the program possible. She spent time encouraging the students, cheering them on during activities, and reminding them of the White family’s guiding mantra: “Be a Leader. Be a Learner. Be a Friend.”

She not only spent the afternoon cheering students on—she even climbed the Y Wall herself, showing the same courage and determination she encouraged in them. Her presence was both inspiring and affirming—connecting the scholars’ experiences directly to the White family’s commitment to education and leadership in Northwest Indiana.

The retreat was made possible through the partnership between Big Shoulders Fund Northwest Indiana and the Crossroads YMCA.

United by shared values and strengthened bonds, these young leaders left camp with sharpened skills and a renewed commitment to lead with heart, integrity, and purpose.
