The 22nd annual Festival of the Lakes has wrapped up. The event took place at Wolf Lake Memorial Park from July 15-19, bringing thousands of people from the Hammond community together for five days of fun activities to enjoy the summer, including concerts, carnival rides, food vendors, and community events. Each day showcased a different lineup of artists, demonstrating the different music genres for all to enjoy.

The City of Hammond also held its first FIFA World Cup 2026 watch party. On July 19, the last day of the Festival of the Lakes, gates were open at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake to cheer on the final two teams, Spain and Argentina. The event was a free, live viewing of the championship match on a massive outdoor screen.

What’s coming up?

The PAV Summer Concert Series is a free, three-month live music program in Hammond. During July, August, and September, it will be held at the Wolf Lake Memorial Park Pavilion. The event is sponsored by the City of Hammond and the Hammond Port Authority. The Summer Concert Series features tribute bands, rock acts, and local performers. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets to enjoy the spectacular performances. Events of each concert will open their gates at 6 p.m., with performances kicking off at 7 p.m.

The series kicks off on July 25 with Secondhand News, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, taking over the stage. During August, five bands will play, with four being tribute bands. On August 1, RICO!, a Chicago-based band will play their original hits. Along the lineup, August 8-29 will have four tribute bands playing. Echoes of Pompeii will bring music to pay tribute to Pink Floyd, KASHMIR with the Led Zeppelin tribute, Revolución De Amor Mana tribute band, and Crazy Train-America’s Ozzy tribute band.

Community member spotlight:

Mya Bell is the social media coordinator for The Festival of The Lakes and the City of Hammond. She graduated from Purdue University with a political science degree, but discovered her love for media a year ago. For the festival, Bell uses social media strategically to inform, anticipate, and engage people in the experience of the festival during and before the event. The team prepares up to a year in advance, ensuring smooth operations with how people see the festival; they show the highlights and experiences.

“During the festival, we do a lot of story posts so people, even if they can’t be here in person, can feel like they’re here,” Bell said. “We’re highlighting all the fun stuff we’ve got going on, showing some of the winds of the night and keeping people positive.”

The team uses platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to reach its audience. Instagram focuses on telling stories and sharing engaging posts, such as showcasing the rides and food people can enjoy. Facebook is for event details so people can be interested in what’s coming up. These apps promote content to contribute to the attendee experience and increase engagement.

“Instagram is one of our most popular platforms for Festival of the Lakes. It reaches people of numerous age groups,” Bell said. “Facebook is nice because we can put a lot of the events on there, so we can see how many people are interested in coming, and put a little more event details.”

The role that Bell does for the festival is exceptional. As the social media coordinator, she is responsible for capturing moments that make the festival look like a place worth going to. Additionally, she also shares posts on the different Hammond city pages. Bell has a lot of creativity and stamina in this role; this helps her stay engaged with the Hammond community.

“I primarily plan what’s going to be posted during the fest, capturing content, and getting stuff posted onto feeds,” Bell said. “I’ll be sharing stuff among the different Hammond pages, and also sharing some of the user-generated content or other organizations’ posts.”

Bell takes time editing and deciding which moments deserve the most media attention. She captures content to showcase everything. This helps coordinate online spectators and future participants checking out the festival and Hammond. However, people will have different experiences than others, leaving Bell to decide which is the best for the media to see.

“I try to give everything equal media attention; there are different parts of the festival that everybody loves,” Bell said. “Everyone’s experience is different, and there’s something here for everyone to enjoy, so I really try to give things equal attention.”

Bell provides amazing leadership for the festival and within the community of Hammond. She leads the media in the direction she’s looking for, providing the best audience participation on social media. The management she has as the social media coordinator helps not only the festival, but the experience of living in Hammond.

Marching forward on June 13, students of the Lake Central High School marching band and color guard led the procession of the “Liberty & Lights” parade in Schererville, Indiana.

“My favorite moment in the parade is when I get to see my family on the sidelines cheering me and the band on. I like that the parade is a different form of marching band, and it’s a good way to get to know the people you will be marching with in preparation,” incoming junior Zoey Pigors said.

Preparation for the event is multi-faceted. Both the students and heads of the extracurriculars put great effort into planning their performance.

“I prepare for the parade by making sure I have the music memorized and can perform it while marching. It usually takes about one or two weeks of focused practice to really fine-tune all the details,” incoming senior Joshua Woods said. “The music and performance are planned well in advance. During rehearsals, we may make small changes or add something, but once the parade begins, everything is performed as rehearsed.”

The event serves multiple purposes for the various attendees.

“The parade changed how I view marching bands, because it makes it seem like the things we do on the field is less life and death. Seeing everyone from the community there to support us gives me comfort and excitement for the upcoming season,” Pigors said.

The Lake Central High School Marching Band was awarded for “Best Walking Unit” by the end of the event. This accomplishment has been years in the making.

“The parade, especially the first time I participated during my freshman year, helped me become much closer to the other members of the band. Seeing what we can accomplish after putting all that time encourages you to continue to put in that effort. Over the years, I’ve improved my posture, projection and overall performance because everything has become more natural through repetition and experience,” Woods said.

What’s coming up?

The festivities of Festa Italiana take place between July 17-19 at Villa Cesare Banquets & Events in Schererville. Initial appeal starts with delicious and local food options.

“We try to get some local restaurants and food trucks: Izzy’s doing Italian ice and gelato, Daddy’s Pizza is doing some single-serve pizzas, and also another vendor who does farmers markets in the area like Crown Point and St. John is called Mama Fraz; she’s known for her arancini rice balls, mozzarella sticks, meatball sandwiches and sausage,” Chairman Jon Biancardi said. “Roma Foods is partnering with Jack Lencioni; they’re doing Italian sausage, ravioli, and other pasta dishes. We have a company doing fried dough and lemon shake-ups — or freshly-squeezed lemonade. Applewood Farms is a local poultry and meat supplier and is going to be making some shrimp skewers and shrimp pasta, with lamb options and beef options.”

More than the food, the musical setup is wide-ranging.

“A band called La Tosca couldn’t make it this year, but they are from Naples. On Sunday, Carmelo Zaccone plays the keyboard and sings in Italian. Other than that, we have plenty of performers who sing like Dean Martin: Frankie Seta, Vince Amore, Jim Bulanda. The Tommy Panici quartet, a four-piece band, and then another guy that dresses up in makeup and clothes as Tony Bennett, doing all his songs,” Biancardi said.

Volunteerism from the community is the main component allowing festivities to run smoothly. The festivities help to promote Italian pride.

“Villa Cesare is owned by Cesare Battisti Club. It’s our Italian club and we’ve been around since 1919, utilizing our volunteers and members to create and make it work. We are here to support and promote Italian culture; this gives us a way to do that for the community, so everyone’s excited about it,” Biancardi said.

In addition, many competitions take place, including in bocce ball, grape-stomping and spaghetti-eating.

“I think the most entertaining activity is probably spaghetti-eating contests, because you do have all age groups. It’s hands-free, so whoever eats a plate of pasta the fastest wins. It’s just a fun experience for everyone to enjoy and watch or participate in. We usually put a dollop of salsa on top of the pasta, so it gets pretty messy, and fun for taking pictures,” Biancardi said.

The wide range of entertainment produces a complexity in planning.

“It started in 2017. There’s other festivals like Greek Fest and Serb Fest: why not showcase our culture? The biggest thing is how do we execute it? That first year, I went around contacting other festivals to see where their care persons were and ask them what I need on a local level, a state level and if they can help me out with setup and how everything works, as far as forms and applications. That was the biggest help with how we could execute it,” Biancardi said.

Community member spotlight:

Darin Jacobs is a business owner in the Lake Central community as well as across other areas in Northwest Indiana. He owns a Rosati’s restaurant in St. John, alongside another in Valparaiso, and a Bomber’s BBQ in Crown Point.

“St. John is trending towards a younger community and a blend of Indiana residents and Illinois residents who have come over. I have invested in my employees and in new businesses,” Jacobs said. “I would say Lake Central Pride is my favorite part of running a business in the St. John area.”

Jacobs also supports the community through his volunteerism and contributions to nonprofit work.

“I’m a lifelong blood donor and I donate to a lot of various nonprofits: girls’ softball, boys’ baseball, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts,” Jacobs said. “I think whether you’re a business person or not there’s other ways to volunteer with your time. For example: a blood drive. It costs you nothing but a little bit of your time.”

Classes at Lake Central High School proved to provide pivotal experiences for work Jacobs would do following his graduation from the school in 1985.

“I think every class and every teacher had a positive effect on me in shaping me into a better business person. Anything from back then — we had typing and were the first generation with computers, general business classes, an accounting class, calculus,” Jacobs said. “You’re always dealing with numbers; every single course you take regarding math skills is basically arithmetic.”

The road to successful entrepreneurship is not always a smooth path, but there are ways to set a person up for success.

“I started as a general manager. I trained the person under me to take over, so I could go out and start my other three restaurants. Start small, find something that really interests you and you have passion for. It’s a lot easier to start a business with something that you enjoy and have a passion for, because you’re more willing to go the extra mile,” Jacobs said.

After months of anticipation, Blockhead Beerworks opened their second location in La Porte.

Blockhead is a Valparaiso-based, Asian Fusion restaurant that combines high-end techniques with bold flavors that can’t be seen anywhere else. From smash burgers to noodle dishes, there is a wide variety of items to choose from. Many of these items are gluten free and vegan, or can be modified to be either.

La Porte has a variety of restaurants, but many community members travel outside the area to find these unique places that aren’t always in town.

“When people come into my place of employment, some ask for good food recommendations in La Porte. In all honesty, sometimes I don’t really know what to say because a lot of food establishments around La Porte are fast food. Sometimes they’re looking for a certain type of food and that makes it even more difficult due to the lack of food diversity, which is why Blockhead is so important for La Porte, it’s really starting to add variety to the area,” said Carly Jones, local community member.

Outside of food, Blockhead is known for their alcoholic beverages. Most of their spirits are brewed in-house and made from local Indiana produce. Each spirit is made in small batches to ensure quality, and these can be found in Blockhead’s signature cocktails.

Many beer options are made in-house, and seasonal items are available, giving customers new options to choose from. One of these is “Welcome To The Block Parade” which is made using local Fluid coffee.

Blockhead is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday brunch will be coming soon. The address to the La Porte location is 1100 Lincolnway.

What’s coming up?

The La Porte County Historical Society is hosting the 18th annual Old Car Show at the museum on Saturday, July 18.

This event has grown exponentially in popularity over the past 17 years, and car fans from across Northwest Indiana travel to see the variety of cars. In previous years, over 100 cars with varying models have been seen at this event. Many muscle, classic, and collectable cars can be seen at the car show.

If one is interested in entering, note that vehicles entering the show must be at least 30 years old. Entrants will receive dash plaques and will compete for a variety of awards and trophies. Some of these awards include Staff Choice, Public’s Choice, Mayor’s Choice, and more.

This event is more than just cars, there is also free admission to the museum with the ticket. There will also be food trucks for viewers and society members.

Tickets for visitors cost $3 per person, while society members and kids below the age of 18 are free. This event is located at 2405 Indiana Ave.

Community Member Spotlight:

Representative Randall Novak has been a member of the La Porte community since 1969, and has been advocating for residents of Indiana for several years.

Novak didn’t take the traditional path through higher education. Throughout his career, he completed fire science courses through Ivy Tech and earned numerous state certifications and licenses. With these experiences, he was taught leadership, budgeting, problem-solving, and how to serve the community effectively.

During and after his education, he spent 33 years with the Michigan City Fire Department, serving as union president and eventually retiring as fire chief before becoming a realtor in 1998. With his career changes, his goal never changed throughout his job experiences: he wanted to help others and advocate for his community. Eventually his service led him to work for the Michiana Shores Town Board, then In 2014, he was elected to the La Porte County Council, where he worked on budgets and local issues before eventually being elected to the Indiana house of representatives.

“My years as a firefighter taught me lessons I use every day as a state representative. As a firefighter and later as fire chief, I learned how to stay calm under pressure, make difficult decisions, solve problems, and put people first,” Novak said. “In the fire service, you don’t ask whether someone is a Democrat or a Republican before you help them—you simply do what’s best for the people who need you. I’ve carried that same approach into government. My focus is on finding common-sense solutions, working with others, and serving the people of Northwest Indiana.”

Novak is community driven in his policies, and with this, his main goal is to serve and advocate for his community. This philosophy has been with him his entire career even before politics, and this has helped him create relationships and to make a difference in the lives of Indiana residents.

“I want to help build safer communities, keep utilities affordable, strengthen public education, support first responders, create opportunities for good-paying jobs, and ensure that working families and seniors have access to affordable housing and the support they need,” Novak said. “I also want people to know they have a state representative who listens, is accessible, and puts people ahead of politics. If, years from now, people can say I helped make their community a little safer, their government a little more accountable, and their future a little brighter, then I’ll consider my service a success.”

Novak’s focus on putting the people of Indiana first has led to overwhelming support for many of his ideas. When there is a need for results, Novak uses his experience and knowledge to deliver.

La Lumiere School (La Lu), a boarding and day prep school in La Porte, continues to stay busy with returning and incoming students, as well as children from the surrounding community. This summer, La Lu successfully hosted Freshman Experience and, for the first time, two sessions of Camp La Lu.

Freshman Experience was a success, as members of the Class of 2030 had the opportunity to stay on campus during the week of June 15. Throughout the week, students participated in sports, games, and preview lessons that gave them a glimpse of what their classes will be like this school year. The program always results in new friendships, lasting memories, and a smoother transition into high school. The roommate that someone has during Freshman Experience may grow to be their best friend for the next four years.

The following two weeks marked the inaugural sessions of Camp La Lu. Children from both the surrounding community and several hours away came to campus to enjoy a fun-filled week of summer camp. From building rockets to swimming in the lake, campers had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities while experiencing La Lu’s beautiful campus. Former and current La Lu students also came onto campus to aid with activities and share a little bit more about the school. After a great two sessions, it is safe to say this new tradition will continue for many years to come.

The final session of Camp La Lu concluded during the week of June 28, allowing campers and staff to return home in time to celebrate the Fourth of July with their families and friends. Fireworks, celebrations, and parades could be heard throughout the La Porte area and beyond.

La Lu’s campus will only remain quiet for a few more weeks before activity picks back up with athletic camps, pre-season practices, and preparations for another exciting school year.

Summer is quickly coming to an end, which means the return of fall athletics at La Lu. Girls and boys soccer, along with girls volleyball, have already begun holding weekly practices to prepare for their upcoming seasons. Although the summer heat and frequent storms have occasionally forced teams to adjust their schedules, athletes have continued working hard and making the most of every opportunity to train before the school year begins.

These summer practices also provide an excellent opportunity for incoming freshmen and new students to get to know their coaches and teammates before the official season begins. Building relationships early helps make the transition to a new school much easier, and by the time orientation week arrives, many students already feel comfortable with their teams and the expectations of their coaches.

Once the school year begins, practices quickly become more demanding. Rather than easing into the season, student-athletes participate in two practices each day during the first week of school before returning to the regular practice schedule. The extra time allows teams to prepare for competitions and tournaments that begin shortly after the start of classes.

Athletics are not the only thing keeping Lakers busy this summer. As the first day of school approaches on August 16, students are also completing summer assignments and preparing for their upcoming classes. With preseason practices, academic work, and orientation just around the corner, excitement continues to build as the La Lu community looks forward to welcoming students back to campus for another successful school year.

Community member spotlight:

Incoming freshman Grady Stankewicz is excited to join the La Lu community this fall. Originally from Chesterton, Indiana, Stankewicz enjoys staying active and spending time with friends, making him a great addition to campus. With his older sister entering her senior year at La Lu, he is looking forward to becoming part of a school that is already familiar to his family.

Baseball has been a major part of Stankewicz’s life for many years. He plays for USA Prime Midwest, a travel baseball organization that has taken him to tournaments across the country, including Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Panama City Beach, Florida. The sport keeps him busy throughout the year while giving him the opportunity to compete at a high level and travel to new places.

“Baseball has always been a big part of my life, and I really enjoy everything about it. Traveling with my team and competing against great competition has made a lot of great memories,” Stankewicz said.

In addition to baseball, Stankewicz played basketball throughout middle school and hopes to continue playing at La Lu. Although he has not played soccer in several years, he is excited to return to the sport and represent the Lakers this fall.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting new people, playing sports, and being part of the La community,” Stankewicz said.

During the weekend of July 26-28, Griffith held its annual Country Music Festival.

The festival brought cowboys and cowgirls from all over the area to see some of the music they enjoy, while also giving some people the opportunity to listen to music they may have never heard before.

The Country Music Festival is a new popular attraction taking place in the middle of summer, and something that residents will be looking forward to for years to come.

“I love being with my friends and family, and seeing all the different things there, like food and music,” said festival attendee Madison Denny. “I am absolutely going to go again, and a lot of people should go in the future.”

Along with the Country Music Fest, the weekly Friday Market in Central Park has been happening. The market is an opportunity for people of all ages to attend and have fun with friends and family, listen to good music, and eat good food.

“The Friday Market has always been something I’ve looked forward to,” said Ayden Foster, Griffith resident. “My friends and I always go and we always have a lot of fun with each other.”

Friday Market’s are something that a lot of people in town continue to look forward to year after year. Vendors get a chance to do business and sell food, and it is a place where residents can be themselves with the people they love.

What’s coming up?

Inaugurated in 1974, the “Park Full of Art” event and fine arts showcase has become a tradition in Central Park.

Taking place during the third weekend of July, the art show displays work from the likes of artists around the country wanting to get their name out to the public.

“We typically have around 45 to 50 vendors,” said Kathie Price, current chairman. “All of them are fine arts artists, ranging anywhere from sculptors to painters, and even jewelers and potters. Everyone comes from around the country, some from towns around us like Highland and Munster, as well as those from other states like Michigan and Tennessee, even Oklahoma.”

The event is in its 51st year, with many making an effort to attend each year to see the different pieces that are offered and on display. Throughout those years, the committee has grown and made not just planning, but the entire process of the event easier for everyone involved.

“Charles VanGorp originally started the event, and my dad eventually took over after just the first year,” said Price. “Now, I am the chairman, and there’s a committee of around 20 people.”

“We have several people who have been on the committee for decades, and everyone working together is like a well-oiled machine,” said Price. “They are very good at what they do, and they put on an amazing show every year.”

This year is no different. They have the scene set for artists alike to come together and create a community of creativity. People in surrounding towns and anywhere can partake in the event and see several unique types of fine art in “Park Full of Art.”

Community Spotlight:

For the 53rd annual Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association (IVFA) Miss Flame Convention, Gracey Wilson was the District 1 representative for the competition.

“In the beginning, I really thought it would make me extremely busy, but I was wrong,” said Wilson.

She was nervous, as she’s never done anything of the sort.

“I didn’t exactly know what to expect,” said Wilson. “I had so many people tell me different things, I kind of just went in not really expecting anything big, and I think it actually helped me.”

The convention was held in Indianapolis on June 17-19.

“My mind couldn’t actually believe that I was there and about to be competing,” said Wilson. “I had waves of excitement and anxiety, but it all went away pretty quickly.”

Wilson had to attend different events with the other participants, including helping with the Ronald McDonald Charity and the judging events.

“I just tried to stay confident and be myself during my interviews,” said Wilson. “After I was just pouring bad thoughts about things I might’ve done wrong or bad.”

Wilson didn’t win the competition, but she’s glad she went. It was a vital learning opportunity for her, and she gained knowledge to use for years to come.

“Honestly, after the event, I got so many compliments and ‘Good jobs,’” said Wilson. “It made me feel honored in the end, and I’m looking forward to next year.”

The Hessville Community Center hosted the sixth annual Live in the Ville street festival on June 12-13. The celebration drew an estimated 3,000 attendees daily to the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and 173rd Street.

The event displayed downtown Hessville’s culture and brought neighbors together in a strong show of local pride. Residents enjoyed live music, street performers, food trucks and a beer garden on both days.

“Events like Live in the Ville allow people from all different backgrounds to come together to support, work and learn from one another,” said Ayriana Tidwell, community member. “I love attending this event with my family every year and being there radiates the energy of unity and fun in our community.”

Families also visited exciting festival events, including live wrestling and a reptile viewing experience featuring turtles and lizards.

The City of Hammond and the Juneteenth Committee hosted the sixth annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, honoring the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrating the city’s cultural diversity.

The celebration began at 10 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Community members spent the morning enjoying music by DJ Karri, shopping at vendor booths and sampling local food trucks.

“As someone who is African American myself, learning about the history of people around you can be an extremely insightful thing to do,” said Milo McMillen, event attendee. “Knowing the highs and lows of these histories helps to present new cultures to more people and destigmatize topics from civil rights to slavery. It is a lot more than a couple of days out of the year that Black history matters, but any opportunity to learn something new is an opportunity taken well.”

Automotive enthusiasts convened at noon in the City Hall parking lot for the second annual Bring ’em Out Bike and Car Show, concluding a day centered on unity and local heritage.

The annual Venetian Night at the Hammond Marina returns to the waterfront on July 11, continuing a tradition that promotes creativity and local spirit.

The festivities will kick off at noon with children’s games at the beach. Attendees can enjoy local food vendors and a beer garden starting at 6 p.m.

The event features dock competitions, which encourage local boat owners to decorate their boats and docks with creative designs. This year, participants are encouraged to follow the “video game” theme.

Attendees can look forward to live entertainment from Hello Weekend starting at 7:30 p.m. The Chicago cover band returns every year, delivering a high-energy performance that keeps the crowd dancing until a fireworks show closes the celebration.

The Pavilion at Wolf Lake Memorial Park (PAV) will host the Festival of the Lakes from July 15-19. The five-day event welcomes residents from across the Region for summer activities and music.

Parking costs $30 per vehicle, while general concert admission remains free. Attendees can explore the carnival midway, take free boat rides and participate in a 5K walk/run.

Opening the festival is The Ultimate Freestyle Experience. This nostalgic dance party will feature legendary freestyle and dance-pop acts, including TKA, George Lamond, Judy Torres and C+C Music Factory.

Known for hits like “Need a Favor” and “Son of a Sinner,” Jelly Roll takes the stage on July 16. His music mixes elements of country, rock and rap through his personal songwriting and captivates audiences on stage.

On July 17, attendees can catch punk rock icons The Offspring. With classic, energetic alternative anthems like “Self Esteem” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” the band will bring a high-octane performance to the pavilion, followed by a fireworks show.

Hip-hop heavyweights Moneybagg Yo and Kevin Gates will co-headline on July 18. Both artists have dominated the rap charts with their distinct storytelling, assuring a high-energy Saturday night that will culminate in a colorful fireworks display.

Closing the festival is the legendary Banda El Recodo, a historic icon in regional Mexican music. With decades of awards and a massive catalog of hits, the ensemble’s brass sound will provide an unforgettable end to the celebration.

“I am most excited to see Jelly Roll perform,” community member Peyton Burgess said. “It has been a dream of mine to see him live. I have listened to his music for a long time and he truly has a beautiful voice.”

The festival also features daytime events that promote community inclusion. Seniors aged 55 and older are invited to Pulaski Park Senior Center on July 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for free lunch, music and dancing. Individuals with special needs can enjoy free carnival rides and lunch at the festival on July 18, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Port Authority will host the city’s National Night Out on August 4. The free event will take place from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at the PAV.

The evening connects residents with local emergency services. Families can view tactical vehicles, fire trucks, and squad cars from the Hammond Police and Fire Departments up close.

“Going to events like these is vital because you build trust with your local law enforcement and surrounding agencies,” said local photographer Julio Bonet. “The moral value that events like these hold is all about trust and respect. You see multiple demonstrations by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the Hammond Police Department and others, which show how much police officers deal with on shifts.”

Attendees can watch live demonstrations, including K-9 tracking exercises, simulated takedowns with officers in bite suits and SWAT gear displays. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department helicopter will land and depart from the PAV.

The first 500 children in attendance will receive a free custom swag bag. The evening will close with face painting, giveaways and local food trucks and tables from businesses.

Community member spotlight:

At 97 years old, Hammond resident Mary LeVan has not let her age limit her lively and engaged life. Born in 1928, LeVan has spent her entire life in the city, witnessing the local economy rise and fall.

“I have lived here all my life and I have seen changes within our economy,” LeVan said. “I see it coming back again with more local events and venues, like the new YMCA and Sportsplex.”

LeVan stays involved in the community by participating in daily exercise programs. Her schedule includes Silver Sneakers classes, Zumba sessions, line dancing at the Pulaski Park Senior Center and pedaling five miles on a recumbent bike at the Hammond Civic Center.

“If it is not fun, I am not doing it. If I like it, I do it more than once,” LeVan said.

Beyond physical fitness, LeVan supports local arts and entertainment. She attends open mic nights at Paul Henry’s Art Gallery, explores the downtown farmers market and enjoys live jazz and blues concerts with friends. She also joins group hikes in the Indiana Dunes.

Looking back on her nearly century long journey, LeVan credits her success and fulfillment to the steady support she has received from loved ones throughout her life. The people she associates with are motivators to her, and she feels blessed to have those people in her life.

Watching peers struggle with their health over the years has only deepened her appreciation for her own independence.

“I had a friend I loved dearly, and she got to the point where she could not even feed herself,” LeVan said. “I am just grateful to be able to go, and I am grateful to be healthy.”

LeVan acknowledges that her journey has not always been easy. She recalls times when life was full of challenges, making her current leisure time even more meaningful. When advising younger generations, she stresses the importance of staying connected and valuing each day.

“Stay involved with people, and just enjoy whatever you can do,” LeVan said. “Life isn’t a competition. I just enjoy life, appreciate every day, and I am grateful to God for being mobile.”

LeVan plans to continue her active lifestyle. She recently renewed her driver’s license for another two years, allowing her to keep exploring the city she calls home.

“I got my driver’s license renewed, so get your kids off the street,” LeVan said. “I am grateful for that, and I am going to keep moving.”

Throughout June members of the Morgan Township community were involved in various events that took place at Morgan Township High School (MTHS).

The graduation ceremony for the class of 2026 took place on June 2 in the MTHS gymnasium. The ceremony began at 6:30 p.m. and ran for roughly an hour and a half.

“I appreciated that after the ceremony I was able to talk to and take pictures with all of the teachers and staff who made an impact during my time at MTHS,” said graduated senior Olivia Taylor. “It was the shortest and funniest graduation I’ve been to and the best one I’ve attended.”

At the ceremony several graduating seniors spoke. Those included salutatorian Ellie Higgins, class representative Aiden Dippo, and class president and valedictorian Garret Stavitzke who addressed their classmates and the friends and family that attended.

On June 8-12 Camp Invention was hosted at MTHS for all students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Camp Invention is a STEM summer camp that taught students to problem-solve and invent creatively. Middle and high school students were also involved as Leadership Interns in Training and Leadership Interns (LIs), helping to run the week-long camp.

“I was so glad that I volunteered as a LI for Camp Invention this summer. I was able to meet new people and have a genuinely fun time, but most importantly, I was able to help the kids discover, learn and create,” said LI and MTHS student Jenna Abbring. “The kids made multiple inventions over the course of the week, so there were many opportunities to see their problem-solving skills and creativity shine. Many kids from different areas, not just Morgan Township, came so everyone was able to meet and get to know people that they might not have otherwise met.”

There were four Camp Invention modules that the campers participated in: Fur-ensics, The Infringers, Make Waves and Space Morphers. Each had its own unique curriculum and was taught by Morgan Township Elementary School teachers.

What’s coming up?

MTHS students and members of the community will be kept busy throughout July with the annual MTHS Band Camp and Porter County Fair.

On July 14-16 members of the MTHS band program will participate in the annual MTHS band camp. At the camp, these students will practice and play together in preparation for the upcoming school year. The camp will run from 2-9 p.m. each day at MTHS.

The Porter County Fair will run from July 23 through August 1 at the Porter County Fairgrounds. During the duration of the fair, 4-H members from throughout the community will participate in various 4-H events, from livestock judging to photography.

“I’m looking forward to the rides, projects, and of course, the food,” said 4-H member and MTHS student Addison Modglin. “My favorite project in 4-H is the soil and water project. This year, I’m hoping for another Grand Champion ribbon, along with high scores in my other projects as well.”

The Porter County Fair will also have several concerts with a different music artist each night. Some of these artists include Trace Adkins who will be performing on July 26 and Flo Rida who will be performing on July 27, with special guest DaBaby. In addition to these concerts, there will be several other events taking place, such as the annual Demolition Derby which will be held on July 31.

Community spotlight:

Tim Bucher is the founder and president of BucherTech and helps businesses and other organizations manage their information technology and cybersecurity. He has lived in Morgan Township for most of his life.

“I like to interact with others, preferably face to face,” Bucher said. “We all have different gifts and skills and I enjoy meeting new students and learning about their abilities.”

Bucher went to school at MTHS and served on the school board for 20 years. He has also been the Kiwanis Noon Club liaison or school advisor for MTHS’s Key Club ever since it began.

“We don’t have primadonnas in Morgan Township. Everyone has a worth regardless of their jobs, economic statuses, or beliefs,” Bucher said. “We don’t have a pretentious culture implying that some are better than others.”

Bucher has been a lay pastor at the local Apostolic Christian Church since 2013 and a member of the Valparaiso Kiwanis Noon Club since 1985.

“I want people to know that I care,” Bucher said. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. As a Christian, it is my responsibility and opportunity to help others.”

Bucher’s favorite community event is the Kiwanis pancake day, which is held annually on the second Saturday of March.

“Over 2,000 people come together to enjoy food and each other. We raise lots of money which we put back into the community,” Bucher said. “There are five Key clubs in our county, yet each year our MTHS club sells the most pancake tickets! I am very proud of our kids, though we are the smallest school, we produce like we are the biggest.”

The Mishawaka community is brought together every summer Sunday to support local farmers, vendors, and artisans at the Mishawaka Market at Ironworks Plaza. The marketplace is bustling with vendors offering fresh produce, handmade items, baked goods, and more. The corners of the plaza house food trucks, live music, kid’s activities, and community organizations, cultivating a lively atmosphere beside the riverwalk.

The market kicked off its season on May 31, and will be held every Sunday through the early fall until September 27. This is the eighth year of the market, which has continued to grow rapidly. Organizers have noticed that vendors have even begun to sell out early.

“What makes the market truly special is its ability to be a place for residents to come together and experience unique parts of our community that they may not always have the chance to encounter,” said Ironworks Program and Events Director Kaylan Chaput.

The market provides small businesses a place to grow and connect to customers. It also encourages citizens to shop locally and spend time together outside. It is one of Mishawaka’s signature summer events alongside concerts and riverwalk festivals, and shouldn’t be missed.

What’s coming up?

Who says you have to wait until December to celebrate Christmas? In Mishawaka, Christmas is right around the corner. The Mishawaka Parks and Rec department will host Christmas in July on July 11 at the Ironworks Plaza from 6-9 p.m.

This event fundraises for local schools, and simultaneously is an opportunity to have fun in the sun. The entrance fee is $5, or, alternatively, attendees can bring a back to school item.

Santa and his helpers will be making a special appearance, and guests can stop by a Santa photo booth. Families can enjoy a bike parade, ride bumper cars, chow down at food trucks, and take part in more activities for children.

Christmas in July is a unique blend of holiday spirit and summer fun. It’s a perfect event for families, and a welcome opportunity to support local schools.

Community spotlight:

Caitie Cataldo lives in Michiana with her family, but she carries a deep longing in her heart for her homeland, Ireland, which she zealously shares with others. Cataldo has been leading trips to Ireland for years and has been involved in youth and women’s ministry for most of her life.

Cataldo is a very passionate person; her Catholic faith drives her, and her hobbies include playing music, gardening, going for walks, or anything that takes her outdoors.

Both sets of Cataldo’s grandparents immigrated to America and set up a beautiful life. One of her grandfather’s set up what became at one point the largest Irish-American festival, which is still run in the family today.

Her mother grew up in Irish-American Cleveland, Ohio and then moved back to Ireland with Cataldo’s father. The family came back to the States for a two week visit when Cataldo was young and never left.

“The longing for Ireland is very prevalent in my family’s experience. That longing was there in my heart as well. The Irish music, the culture, it permeated more than just my senses, it was in my heart and soul.” said Cataldo, “I found that I was not the only one. Even if someone had never been to Ireland, there was something deeper in the experience of Irish heritage.”

Cataldo believes our first moments on Earth set a tone for the rest of our lives. So, in that way, while she does not have specific memories of her early childhood in Ireland, she feels like she is home whenever she travels back. Cataldo loves the Irish people, humor, unmatched hospitality, quaint towns, her family farm, and the spiritual encounter Ireland brings her. For her, all of the culture and experience points to something greater: God.

“The veil between us and Heaven is a bit thinner in Ireland,” said Cataldo, “Being there feels like getting back to something true.”

Cataldo has been giving tours to her homeland since she was 20 years old. What began as a college roommate trip became her very own LLC tour travel small business. Cataldo describes that her work is beyond her best dreams and just fell into place.

“It’s very important to me that each person on my trips is taken care of and seen. I think that’s something I bring that not every tour company does. I do every bit of the work myself. I know each traveler by heart, by name, and by face.” said Cataldo.

Cataldo’s trips are unique because she does not do the tourist-trap trips. She shares the “off the beat gems” with her fellow travelers and hopes that she allows people to encounter Ireland and fall in love.

The most rewarding part of leading these trips for Cataldo is sharing the experience with others and getting to know new people and their stories. Cataldo loves when travelers want to come back within a year, and she loves providing a safe, friendly space for people who want to travel solo but are unsure.

“My heart has hurt in my life. I don’t think I’m alone, and so giving people some respite and relief and joy and reminders in ministry, both in my youth ministry, and in my ministry to all who are willing to go with me to Ireland, is why I do what I do,” said Cataldo.

Cataldo is looking forward to announcing a family trip in June 2027. She hopes to provide an experience for families to take a trip where everything is taken care of, and they can relax without worrying about the details.

Cataldo’s experience of being on Earth, longing for her home, both in Heaven and in Ireland, is what has driven her ministry. Whether she is leading young people in the faith, giving talks on retreats, leading worship music, or taking groups to her favorite Ireland spots, Cataldo hopes to be in solidarity with those around her, and to ultimately lead them closer to home.

The streets of Chesterton continue to thrive with its annual European Market. The beloved market, starting the first weekend of May and running until the end of October, is open every Saturday. Several people across the county come out to enjoy live music, discover local vendors, and socialize within the community. Many booths consume Thomas Centennial Park, allowing bright smiles and carefree energy to radiate from civilians, enjoying all the market has to offer.

A plethora of bright logos and colorful designs reflect from every corner, businesses going all out to represent the heart of their personal booths. The European Market not only supports local vendors in their passions but also fosters connections within society.

Michelle O’Dell, the owner of “Books and Bling,” shared why she loves the European Market. O’Dell has been running her business for two years, selling books and other related trinkets to avid readers.

As a former high school English teacher, she’s made it her life’s mission to inspire the younger generation through literature.

“I thought I could do it in a way that’s cute and fun,” said O’Dell. “I look at each one as a work of art from the outside.”

She shares a unique outlook on the committed consistency she’s seen from the members of this small town who celebrate one another, even if only coming out to say hello.

“There’s dedicated people who come every single Saturday, rain or shine. It’s just a great community, it really is,” said O’Dell.

Another business owner, Damon Person, has been in the industry for 15 years. Specializing in food, Person has recently expanded into “Quench Quest,” a dirty-soda culture brand that has brought an exciting new line of flavorful soda combos to the European Market.

“The dirty soda business is booming, so that’s something that brought me in,” said Person.

With an enthralled group such as this circling the town’s beloved market, anyone is fated to find a booth that catches their eye.

Music lovers line up. When small town singers meet trendy bar life, (219) Taproom is the place to be. The rustic interior design, with countless strands of bright fairy lights, creates a welcoming hometown night out.

A must-visit in Chesterton, the Taproom offers a mix of unique drinks and tasty bar food that keeps locals coming back. The busy restaurant has some exciting singers and eventful themed nights coming up, keeping July blissful and full of fun.

The popular tavern has got an impressive lineup of singers this month: Tim Velez, Pamela Rocha, Leann Stutler, Dickey James, and Shane Lindeman are expected to perform.

The month’s lineup also includes two exclusive performances by some of the restaurant’s favorite bands. Chesterton welcomes Acoustically Speaking and Acoustic Echos to perform some summer hits.

Community Member Spotlight:

Every Chesterton native knows about the iconic Peggy Sue’s diner. What some people might not know is the heart and soul that brings the diner to life.

Peggy Sue Nowicki, a third-generation restaurant owner, started her business in early 2003, and her love for the dining scene began at 12 years old. While she began washing dishes in the kitchen of her parents’ restaurant, she dreamed endlessly of one day owning a place of her own. She hopes to pass down the restaurant-loving gene to her two children, William and Riley.

Her love of vintage cars inspires the retro ’50s theme, and has organically morphed into a “Route 66” theme. The vibrant drawings trace the inner walls of the local hotspot, a small embrace that adds to the overall welcoming atmosphere.

Nowicki’s personal favorite item on the menu is the steak burger club, since she is an avid lunch eater and isn’t the biggest fan of breakfast. On the other hand, the restaurant is best known for the pork piggy skillet, which includes all the essential breakfast ingredients: bacon, sausage, ham, gravy, eggs, cheese, and potatoes.

A welcoming environment is standard for Nowicki at Peggy Sue’s Diner. Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a regular, the staff will go out of their way to make you feel like you belong. The warm welcome that greets you as you walk through the door, followed by the buttery smell of grilled goodness is sure to melt every heart that comes in.

The community is truly what makes up the incredible experience at Peggy Sue’s. Nowicki has a sweet Midwestern smile and a charming wit that makes every customer feel as if they’re part of the family. She admits that around 80% of her customers are regulars.

It’s her drive and kindness that allow people not only to fall in love with the sensible establishment, but also its beloved owner. Nowicki is always there to support her team in any way they might need it.

“I think that helps a lot, being able to be willing to do whatever needs to be done,” said Nowicki. “If a waitress calls off, I waitress. If a cook calls off, I cook.”

Nowicki does admit that her stellar business could not have blossomed without the help from her companions.

“I have worked with some amazing people who have given me amazing chances. So, if I couldn’t do something, we figured it out. I’ve had a lot of people help me along the way. I didn’t do all of this myself,” said Nowicki.

She admires loyalty and finds great success in forming relationships within the business industry. When it comes to helping one another out, she values consistency and sticking to one’s word.

“I would rather go with a small business than a big one. I like the connections,” said Nowicki. “I like to stick with the same thing, because they helped me, and I helped them. It works out.”

She’s grateful for the opportunities she’s had and the people who have helped her manage her success throughout the years. Her menu’s cover page reflects her same timeless motto, “In God we trust.”

On June 3, Lake Central High School held its graduation ceremony for the graduating class of 2026. The ceremony marked a transitional period in the lives of all students attending.

“It finally felt real that I was leaving high school. It’s a weird transition since I’m so used to high school, but I also thought about how I’m looking forward to college. I was very nervous as I walked across the stage, but afterwards I felt relieved that I was finally done. I’ll miss some parts of the school and some friends that are not going to the same college as me or are underclassmen, so it’s bittersweet,” Senior Anna Girman said.

The friendships formed during high school contribute to the element of pride many feel during this celebration.

“I was feeling pretty nostalgic during the graduation ceremony, especially when I saw people that I had known since elementary school walk the stage,” Senior Victoria Cometa said.

The ceremony creates a clear distinction between high school and the path that lies beyond.

“It felt different since it was completely definitive. All the other award ceremonies I have been to, I was expected to come back to high school the next day, but not for this one,” Cometa said.

There were many fun aspects of the class of 2026 gathering together. One that stood out above the rest were stunning performances which struck many seniors as the perfect way to end a perfect four years of high school.

“My favorite aspect was the musical groups performing. I am a band kid, so I enjoyed hearing my fellow band mates play music for my graduation. I know some people in choir too, which I also enjoyed,” Girman said.

The Lake Central band’s performance of “Pomp and Circumstance” upon the football field this pride-filled afternoon would kickstart the confidence and pride needed as the Schererville parade approached for the marching band.

“I did enjoy performing at the ceremony, even if it was hot and a long time playing the same piece of music. I enjoyed being close to the graduates and watching all of them get their diplomas one by one; it’s more about the graduation part than the performance, in my opinion. Being in the band allows us to be closer and contribute to something that’s really big, so I enjoyed it for those reasons,” Senior David Ariyo said.

What’s coming up?

The Lake Central marching band is practicing to perform at the Schererville parade down Joliet Street on June 13. This allows the Schererville community to showcase their appreciation and pride for the local high school.

“The travel parade is where we’re playing the school fight song and it usually goes really well. I think it’s good for everyone who’s watching, because I can see a band of students playing my school’s song and it helps the members in the band build confidence. This is their first big performance, where people are watching them – it makes people want to continue in marching band,” Ariyo said.

However, behind the door of the main performance, there is a wide array of fun activities the band enjoys.

“I’m excited because we have periods of time when we finish practice before the parade. There are special events, cool band rituals, and fun games. It’s always super fun and gets people talking. That’s the best time of the parade. We have our own little games,” Ariyo said.

Many of the section leaders have changed for the upcoming year. Section leaders direct the activities of a particular area of the band to increase progress and make a performance, such as at a ceremony or the parade, more cohesive. It is a role that many students are carefully adapting to.

“I’m slowly getting better. I’m really good at leading now, letting everyone learn and grow. You have to have good time management and also realize that people are human. Being able to explain it well and give good feedback creatively is really important. That actually makes someone want to improve,” Ariyo said.

Community member spotlight:

Carrie Wadycki-Cruz is a fine arts teacher at Lake Central, and was the sponsor for the Senior Class Cabinet this year, contributing greatly to the proceedings of the graduation ceremony. She is the teacher of the Comet magazine class, which meets during the third period of the school schedule, and sponsors the Friends of Dorothy Club on top of it all.

“I know I’ve made an impact on some students. I always look for the underdogs at graduation and make sure to hug them and tell them how proud of them I am. It’s so fun to see how much they have grown,” Wadycki-Cruz said.

This year, her contribution to the graduation ceremony was more immense than ever.

“I worked with the admin to help get the students in line and make sure they were looking spiffy before they walked out,” Wadycki-Cruz said.

With a kid of her own who has crossed the stage, the graduation ceremony is so meaningful for Wadycki-Cruz.

“This ceremony was important to me because my daughter graduated. The teachers sat in the back rows, and because her last name is a “W,” I was sitting right behind her. I got to be on the field and give her a big hug when she crossed the stage,” Wadycki-Cruz said.

When all is said and done, the school year repeats.

“As a teacher, the school year ends. Students graduate and move on. But all summer, you plan and look forward to the new students you’ll meet in August. What freshman will I connect with and help grow during the next four years? It’s a cycle and I love it,” Wadycki-Cruz said.
