The Necktie 5K race will occur as per tradition on Father’s Day, Saturday, June 20 in Beverly Shores with festivities starting at 7am and the race beginning at 8am. This popular event is great for celebrating Father’s Day by running or walking the 5 kilometers with your dad while sporting a festive necktie.
This will be the 19th annual race that’s all about community with a celebration of Father’s Day, families running together, and enjoying fun times. Kids of all ages (3 to 80) take part in the race that meanders through the town, goes along the Great Marsh where it passes the Bald Eagles’
nest (perhaps you’ll even spot mom, dad and their eaglets), and makes its way through tree lined streets before hitting the home stretch running adjacent to Lake Michigan and heading towards the finish line that’s fully decorated with neckties.
Prizes (a decorative necktie) will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each age group as well as the first father/son and father/daughter teams to cross the finish line together. Prizes will also be awarded to participants who wear the most decorative neckties. Race T-shirts are short sleeved and uni-sex sized with sizes running from Kid’s Small to Adult XXL.
The T-shirts were designed by Beverly Shores resident, Kelly Sweeney, a graphic designer who has run and walked in the race and cheered runners on several other times. Kelly says, “The design was a no-brainer because I was inspired by the very cool tie displays hanging around town on the day of the race – particularly at the finish line.”
This year, music will be provided by Ryan Craven, son of Jerry and Patti Craven of Beverly Shores. Ryan is both an accomplished runner and musician who will be playing guitar and singing the national anthem, songs he has written about running in high school and college, and other popular music.
Following the post-race activities and medal ceremony, there will be a celebratory finish line brunch and brews at Goblin with complimentary dessert for participants and volunteers. Plus, Gerry Hunt will be taking over the patio with live music all afternoon.
You and your family can register for the Necktie 5K at runsignup.com/necktierun. Cost per entry is $25 ($35 after June 8) and there is a $5 discount per person for groups of 4 or more who register online prior to the deadline of June 8. There’s also a discount for those who want to run, but don’t want a T-shirt. You can also register on the day of the race beginning at 7am, but the cost will be $35 and there may not be any race T-shirts left.
