South Suburban College celebrates student excellence at 2026 Academic Achievement Reception

South Suburban College celebrates student excellence at 2026 Academic Achievement Reception

Students, faculty, and family gathered in South Suburban College’s Performing Arts Center to recognize and celebrate academic excellence during the Academic Achievement Reception. The event marks the success of South Suburban’s students while awarding scholarships to keep education accessible.

The reception comes at the end of the academic year, giving students the opportunity to connect with their peers one last time before summer. It also allows administrators and faculty to speak with the student body in a more casual environment.

The reception began with remarks from South Suburban College Foundation Board President Susan Cox, who emphasized the important role education can play in a student’s life.

“We exist to transform lives and strengthen communities by investing in students, fostering innovation, and cultivating a sustainable future. Today is a powerful reflection of that mission in action,” Cox said.

The South Suburban College Foundation awarded $90,000 across over 80 scholarships. Jane Ellen Stocker, one of the donors who contributed to the Foundation, sees the transformational benefit the Foundation’s work can have on students, their families, and their communities. Stocker emphasized that all students should be checking their eligibility for scholarships, as the money provides flexibility and relief.

“I’ve been supporting the Foundation for years because I firmly believe in it,” Stocker said. “Some people, especially those who may not qualify for federal aid, need to be able to access these scholarships.”

In addition to awarding scholarships, tonight’s event also served as an induction ceremony for the latest members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Joining the honor society grants students access to post-college resources that can help them succeed after graduation.

Dr. Herman Stark, professor and PTK advisor, recognized the overlap between the new PTK members and the night’s scholarship award winners. He believes that student success comes down to something more than a grade.

“It’s not so much about grade point average as it is about the spirit students bring to learning,” he said. “Academic excellence is about a transformation of attitude toward one’s own education. The community is also really important.”

These opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the support of generous donors and a community that buys into South Suburban College and the Foundation’s mission. Whether it’s giving time or money to student success or attending an event like the Foundation’s annual gala, everything adds up to better opportunities for South Suburban College students.

“To faculty and friends, thank you for the love and guidance you pour into our students every day. To our donors, thank you for helping bridge the gap to higher education and investing in dreams that will one day change communities, workplaces, and lives,” Cox said. “This evening has shown us what’s possible when achievement meets opportunity.”
