At the Bearcat Invite hosted at Wheeler High School, the Westville Blackhawks stepped into a cool, slightly windy evening that felt less like a challenge and more like a proving ground. In the air, something powerful happened… growth showed up.
Leading the charge was sophomore standout Sebastian Smolnicky, who delivered a performance that echoed far beyond the finish line. In the 1600 meters, Smolnicky carved out a new personal best of 5:23.43, earning 7th place and securing his spot as 6th on the Westville All-Time List. Not long after, he returned to the track with quiet determination and struck again in the 800 meters, clocking 2:18.50, another personal best, placing 7th, and climbing to 4th on the All-Time List.
Two races. Two breakthroughs. One message: he’s evolving right on time.
Smolnicky’s performance wasn’t just about times, it was about rhythm, patience, and belief. Each lap looked like a page turning in a story that’s still being written.
The Blackhawks also saw sparks of progress across the roster. Connor Keen earned a personal best of 13.43 in the 100 meters. Jack Lacny added his own mark with a personal best of 30.58 in the 200 meters.
In the field events, James Lacny in the shot put, recording a personal best of 23’11.5″.
While the team standings placed Westville 11th overall, the scoreboard told only part of the story. This meet wasn’t about final placement. It was about internal wins, quiet breakthroughs, and laying bricks for what’s coming next.
And what’s coming next arrives quickly.
The Blackhawks return to action on April 22nd at 4:30 PM for the PCC Round Robin at Hebron High School, facing Hebron and Morgan Township.
One meet at a time. One breakthrough at a time.
