The Westville Blackhawks Boys Track Team continued their indoor track and field season Saturday at the HSR NWI Championship Qualifier #2 at Portage High School, highlighted by an impressive performance from the team’s Sprintance duo, sophomores Sebastian Smolnicky and Jayden Couture.
Smolnicky delivered another historic performance in the 3200 meters, crossing the finish line in 12:29.49, a new personal best and school record. The performance marks the second time this indoor season Smolnicky has broken his own school record, continuing to raise the standard for Westville’s distance program.
Running alongside his teammate, Jayden Couture also produced a strong race, finishing in 12:58.62, a personal best performance. The two young Blackhawks continue to push each other in competition, showing steady development and confidence as the season progresses.
Head Coach Demetrius Clark praised the duo’s growth and determination.
“Sebastian and Jayden continue to trust the growth and race with confidence,” Clark said. “Both ran good races, and we are only just scratching the surface and taking one meet at a time.”
The rest of the Blackhawks team also showed solid effort and competitiveness throughout the meet while competing in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put, and the 4×200-meter relay.
Westville will return to Portage High School on Saturday, March 21 at 8:30 a.m. for the HSR Last Chance Meet, where athletes will have their final opportunity to qualify for the HSR Indoor State Championships at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
With momentum building and confidence growing, the Blackhawks look forward to finishing the indoor season strong.
