Library Seeks Community Support for Outdoor Garden Space at New Western Branch

Campaign aims to unlock a $50,000 matching grant through statewide placemaking program

The St. Joe County Public Library Foundation is seeking community support to complete a new outdoor space at the library’s future Western Branch location.

The Library is transforming the former ZB Falcons building into the new home of the Western Branch on the west side of South Bend. While funding for the building renovation is already secured, the Library Foundation is now helping to raise funds to build a Garden Playscape — a free outdoor space designed for reading, play, and gathering.

If the campaign reaches its goal of $50,000 by June 1st 2026, it will unlock a $50,000 matching grant through Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s CreatINg Places program

The planned space will replace existing pavement with greenery, seating, and interactive play features. Library leaders say the project responds to a lack of accessible outdoor gathering spaces in the surrounding neighborhood.

“This is about creating a space people can use every day,” said Bridget Morrey, Development Director. “Somewhere families can spend time together, kids can play, and neighbors can connect.”

The Garden Playscape will include natural play elements, shade trees, native plantings, accessible pathways, and flexible seating. The space is also designed to support small events and library programming.

Community members can donate online or contribute in person at any SJCPL branch. Gifts are matched up to $10,000 per donor. Contributions of any amount beyond that still play a critical role in helping us reach our overall goal for the outdoor space and community kitchen.

Checks may be made payable to SJCPL Foundation (memo: Western Garden) and mailed to: SJCPL Development
