GreatNews.Life Student Voices: Marquette Catholic is Prom Ready

What recently happened?

There have been a lot of things happening on the Marquette Catholic High School (MQT) campus.

Mrs. Meyer’s Dual Enrollment Principles of Management class took a field trip to the Subaru manufacturing plant on April 29. The students learned how Subaru manufactures their products through stamping, body assembling, painting, and assembling and inspection.

“Seeing the process happen right before your eyes was very interesting, I didn’t know there were so many steps to making a car,” Sophomore Erika Canelo said.

Spring sports are in full swing. The MQT Tennis team snatched a victory against Portage 3-2 with Junior Nele Schaeferjohann, Junior Alena Huss and Senior Leighton Kurtich all winning their matches.

The MQT baseball team played a great game at the U.S. Steel Yard with students coming out to support their peers.

“The team played great out there, it was so fun to watch and cheer them on,” Sophomore Even Wittrop said.

The MQT Softball team has turned heads with a 4-4 record. The Blazers are set to play East Chicago with hopes of another win in the books.

What is coming up?

Armageddon games are coming up at MQT. On May 8, the Blazers will partake in a lot of fun activities from volleyball and soccer to trivia and tower building. Each grade level will be competing for first place with everyone competing in at least one activity throughout the day.

“Armageddon is school spirit at its best,” Senior Della Wittrop said.

Another upcoming event for MQT is prom. Prom will be held on May 22 at Blue Chip Casino. The theme is “A Night in Hollywood,” with the main colors being red, gold, and black. The upperclassmen are excited to have a night to remember dancing, singing, dressing up, eating, and participating in the fun activities throughout the night.

“Prom is a night to look forward to for everyone, I can’t wait to see everyone’s outfits and enjoy the night,” Senior Ella Crane said.

The Blazers have plenty to look forward to as the semester is wrapping up. With the fun nights and days ahead, there is so much to be excited for.

Staff spotlight:

Angie Williams is a beloved teacher at MQT. She teaches French I, French II, French III, and a new Intro to Education 101 class. She has been teaching for a total of 12 years, but at MQT, she has taught for seven years. Prior to MQT, she taught in Cincinnati for five years, and she took a break when she had her two sons.

Williams enjoys many things in her classroom but something that she has recently started doing that she found as a turning point was Mani Musicale. Mani Muscale is a French activity where students vote on the songs they like in a march madness type of way.

“Mani Musicale left me shocked. I’ve seen how much my students loved it and after finally deciding to, I’m so glad I did,” Williams said.

Willams describes the students as being very engaged with the French language. She also feels that there was a lot of intrinsic motivation from the students.

Another thing William enjoys is building character. Willams describes this process as community building and very creative. During these engaging activities, even the students who do not participate as much have something to say.

“You truly get to build relationships with the students in this department and that I enjoy,” Williams said.

Besides teaching, Williams enjoys watching Armageddon games twice a year. Williams describes the experience as community building – the students all come together and are very competitive.

Another thing Willams is enjoying is mass. She has been able to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, where everyone can come together and be reflective and quiet. Even though not all students believe in mass, they are all respectful.

Williams attended Indiana University where she got her undergrad in secondary education with concentration in French. She got her masters degree from Xavier University in reading education where she looked to be a reading specialist.

Outside the classroom, Williams enjoys cooking, traveling, being active, being with her friends and family and of course, watching reality television.

Williams advises freshmen to be kind to everyone, it costs nothing, and you never know what anyone else is going through in their lives.

Going into a French class, Williams says that her class isn’t like any other. There will be no time wasted, and students will be going right into using the language. She wants the students to feel confident.

“I don’t want you to feel defeated in learning a language, everyone can learn a language so I try to have you see that in yourself,” Williams said.

Finally, Williams advises graduating seniors to always keep learning. She advises to always stay curious and trust that life has good things in store for them. She thinks that anyone can be taught something even if they do not realize it, there will be many lessons to learn.

Student spotlight:

Kai Keehn is an outstanding senior at MQT. He has participated in many Dual Enrollment classes as well as sports, NHS, and many service projects.

Keehn has taken many dual enrollment classes such as DE Biology, DE Chemistry, DE Business Law, DE International Business, DE Intro to Business, Honors Algebra 1 and 2, DE Trigonometry, DE U.S. History, DE Government, DE English Composition, and DE College Algebra.

Keehn enjoys history, his favorite class has had to be DE U.S. American History. Besides having a love for history, Keehn also loves biology.

“I am very interested in biology, I want to do nursing in college, I have a passion for it,” says Keehn.

Keehn has loved learning about history his whole life. So when he stepped foot in the classroom, he found he really liked Mrs. Root as a teacher.

Outside of the classroom, Keehn participates in varsity tennis and golf. Keehn earned the MVP award this last year for tennis. For golf, Keehn has earned MVP, and three Blazer Awards. Besides the active sports, Keehn participates in NHS and service projects around the community.

Outside of school, Keehn participates in 4H, this will be his tenth year. Keehn shows animals and he shows goats, ducks and chickens.

For college, Keehn is attending Valparaiso University for a bachelor of science degree, with hopes of getting a masters in nursing. Keehn wants to be a general nurse and wants to minor in either history or business.

In his free time, Keehn enjoys golfing, hunting, and hanging out with friends and family.

“My dad brought on golf, and pushed me to play better and at. At a higher level, he’s taught me a lot not just in the game but in life,” Keehn said.

Keehn advises freshmen to not take their time for granted and enjoy the four years they have here, because they will not get them back.

When stepping into Keehn’s favorite class which is history, Keehn advises students to pay attention. Keehn also advises to not procrastinate and to be present to participate in class.

“When you play a competitive sport, you need to practice a lot for your craft. You also need to be close to your teammates; create a brotherhood with your teammates,” Keehn said.

Keehn understands that just because the current juniors are about to embark on their final year, that doesn’t mean they should cave to laziness. It is hard to choose what college is right for them, but no matter the choice, there is no wrong choice.

The people at MQT are what Keehn describes to be amazing, extremely kind souls. He believes that everyone is always there to help and everyone wants you to succeed. Keehn really appreciates his peers and the staff at MQT, and hopes others will see the same.
