A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Tiffany Butterfield

Tiffany Butterfield grew up in Portage, and attended Portage Township Schools from preschool until graduation. In a full circle, she now works for Portage Township Schools as an attendance specialist for Portage High School (PHS).
“Our attendance team always tries to see and greet the kids with a smile and a good morning,” said Butterfield. “I’m fortunate that my office is located in an area of the high school where I get to greet and see the kids. I really dig my job.”
Interacting with the students is one of Butterfield’s favorite aspects of her work day. She is very passionate about her job and spends much of her day coordinating attendance logistics with school parents over the phone.
At one point during her career, Butterfield worked at Kyle Elementary School. Many of the students at PHS also attended Kyle Elementary School while Butterfield worked there.
“The students who attended Kyle Elementary School remember me, and it’s really special,” said Butterfield.
Butterfield’s husband also attended Portage Township Schools. The two attended the same schools until graduation, but did not start dating until they were in their 20s. Their two children, now young adults, also attended Portage Township Schools.
“I was a stay-at-home mom for years, and then started working with the schools so I could follow my own first child there,” said Butterfield.
Butterfield and her husband have always been active in the community in many different ways, including through various leadership positions.
“My children were always tied to the community and participated in a lot of community sports,” said Butterfield. “My husband and I were always involved in athletic boards and the school board. We were on PTO and my husband coached.”
This November, Butterfield and her husband will have been married for 30 years. She is also an avid reader during her free time.
“My favorite book of all time is Jane Eyre,” she said. “I’m re-reading it all the time, and I have several other novels that I want to read this summer.”
Recently, Butterfield has grown an interest in watching documentaries.
“I’ve been getting really into some of these crazy documentaries,” said Butterfield. “I watch them with my daughter sometimes, and we really have a lot of fun.”
Each summer, Butterfield and her family go on a trip together. One vacation spot they’ve always enjoyed is Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
“I think we’re going to try to go back to Tennessee,” she said. “I’m trying to narrow down when we are going so all four of us can go.”
Butterfield is a highly involved wife, mother, school staff member, and community member. This passion for her work, the local high students, her own family, and local committees and boards is evident.
