Taking the First Step: Beginner 5K Training Program Kicks Off with Courage and Community

This past weekend marked the kickoff of the Beginner 5K Training Program, a free community program led by Coach Misty Walker of Miles with Misty Coaching. The six-week journey is designed to help anyone—no matter their fitness level—prepare for the Valpo Turkey Trot 5K with support, accountability, and encouragement every step of the way.

The first group run was filled with excitement, nerves, and new beginnings as participants gathered to take their first strides together. For many, it was their first time running in years—or ever. Among them was Torie Surprise, who showed up determined to start something new for herself.

“I was nervous before my first workout as it is my first time getting fully into running,” Torie shared. “Although I have done a few 5Ks in the past, I have never been consistent.”

Like many in the group, Torie didn’t know what to expect. But once she started moving, her mindset began to shift.

“During the session, I felt surprised. I do not push myself much in general to ever know how much I am actually able to do. I showed myself I am able to do more than I thought I could.”

By the end of that first morning, she felt both exhausted and exhilarated—proud of what she accomplished and excited for what’s ahead.

“Physically, I was very tired and out of breath, but I was able to successfully complete it. Emotionally, I felt a great sense of excitement. I was excited to further continue this journey because I really was able to do more than I thought.”

Torie joined the program as part of her own health and fitness journey that began just a couple of months ago.

“I started eating better and going to the gym constantly. I was feeling proud of myself but wanted to do more. I was watching the Chicago Marathon and thought, I want to be able to do that one day, so I should start some training. I then looked for beginner programs and signed up.”

Now, she’s looking ahead to Thanksgiving with one goal in mind—staying consistent and building on her progress.

“I’m hoping to improve my running and stay consistent. I want to keep moving forward after the Turkey Trot.”

Torie’s story is a perfect reflection of what this program is all about—taking that first step, discovering your strength, and realizing that you’re capable of more than you think.

Over the next six weeks, the Beginner 5K team will continue meeting for group runs, connecting with others, and gaining confidence with the guidance of Coach Misty

Because as Coach Misty reminds her runners, “The hardest part isn’t the miles—it’s finding the courage to begin.” To learn more about the program, please visit: www.mileswithmisty.com
